B*E*S*T Doula Service in Los Angeles

Kate Zachary, CD(DONA)

Kate 1. How long have you been a doula?
My entire life (I'm a middle child), but as a professional since 2011.

2. Why did you decide to become a doula?
Throughout my adult life my friends would ask me to accompany them to doctors appointments and support them during their pregnancies. I didn't really understand why, but I was honored. When my brother in law was in a life threatening car accident (he's okay now!), I realized that my desire to empower and support people during vulnerable times was very strong.

Kate 3. What are your hobbies, passions, diversions, etc.
Cooking, sewing, knitting, reading birth books, practicing yoga, exploring California, and eating ice cream.

4. What is your philosophy about birth?
Lay a strong foundation with information, support team, and mind/body work and then on the big day, let it go. Birth gives us an opportunity to learn about ourselves and our babies. If we can go inside and trust that the work has been done, we can enjoy the process so much more! As a doula, it is my role to protect the space so that couples can labor in the way that feels best for them.

Kate5. A little something about your personal life.
I am married to an amazing man who makes it possible for me to be a doula. I am from Chicago and have two awesome sisters, one of which was born on my 6th birthday. I call her my "doula gateway drug." I have run three marathons (Chicago twice, Disney World once), I went to Illinois State University, and when I was 23 I went skydiving, crash landed, and did not even break a bone! True story.

6. What are your specialties, unique qualities, whatever... what might make someone want to hire you specifically?
I am told by clients that my calm demeanor and sense of humor are what drew them to me. My clients tend to become friends of mine, which I love. I have background as an improv actor, as well as a wedding coordinator, so it's not easy to shock or derail me. I really, really love this work and believe it is what I was put here to do. Oh, and I can sleep anywhere, in any position, at any time.
